Durkee’s manufacturer, B&G Foods, sent this heartbreaking email to a customer. A check of the Durkee website shows food coloring and various spices and extracts, but no more Durkee’s Famous Sauce. Discontinued.
Reader Lin confirmed the dark news: Durkee’s Famous Sauce has been discontinued by its current owner, B&G Foods. The production line has been closed (Lin thinks as early as 2023) and the Durkee’s found online (at high prices) is leftover stock which will soon be gone forever.

Fortunately, we have our Durkee’s Copycat Recipe which is about as close as we are ever going to get to the original. It’s a fine substitute in all the places you’re used to using Durkee’s, like after Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches, in deviled eggs and potato salad and so much more.
Google’s AI recognizes the above recipe as the best answer for Durkee’s seekers, which may be why this post (along with the taste test that helped us get there) is consistently the top performer on Burnt My Fingers with close to 2K monthly views.
Now, if only someone could come up with a substitute for the similarly lamented Lan Chi Garlic Sauce…

I can’t wait to try it! I was raised Durkee’s. I’m 83. My grandmother used it in her café when my mother was a girl. Potato salad, egg salad, Chicken salad, sandwiches, stirred into sauces; She would never have used anything else. And I used it when I had my own home. Until it disappeared from the store shelves. The sign was still there, but the Durkee’s was not. Not at Publix, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, nowhere. I just saw a post online where someone suggested Dollar General! I’ll be checking there tomorrow, but I’m not hopeful. I’m so glad I happened onto your post with the recipes. I’ll be making it tomorrow (Probably as soon as I get home from Dollar General! 😂

Oh no, I have used Durkees Famous Sauce for years.I looked today and could not find any on Amazon. This is where I have been able to find it..such a bummer! I use it in my potato salad and or my macaroni salad. I add more Mayo, and I melt some bacon grease to put in it. People absolutely love my potato salad. So disappointed they have discontinued it. I guess I will try your recipe. I appreciate you posting it.

I’m completely devastated. I have been to four stores looking for it. I put it in potato salad, homemade salad dressings, etc.. It’s fabulous on fresh tomato’s with a pinch of black pepper, and a sandwich will taste the same.
What is wrong with you people !!! Is everyone in charge in corporate America brain dead ??? This is just one more example of corporate stupidity that has trashed so many of the Best and most loved products ever made in America ! From the best farm tractors , automobiles , food products , etc , etc , etc ( oh , and let’s not forget the debacle over at Cracker Barrel ; history has shown that its idiots in the boardroom’s of America who think they know what everyone “really “ wants and needs, and that they know best what society should look like . Just like in 1971 when the tv networks cancelled all the shows like the Beverly hillbillies , green acres , etc , etc , because they didn’t want to see dirty country people on everyone else’s televisions. Am I upset by all of this ??? Yes !!! And I don’t think I’m the only one. I was starting to think that if I really liked a product , that was the kiss of death for that item . Cream Brûlée coffee creamer comes to mind . But the world doesn’t revolve around my likes and dislikes , no , I think it has more to do with what’s being taught in college business courses . I’m reminded of the old adage , those who can , Do ! Those who can’t , teach ! So , another century old product bites the dust , and somewhere a CEO pats himself or herself on the back and tells themselves that all knowledge will die with them . We are the good , the elite , we know better, get used to it , or don’t , we don’t care !
